Periodontal Treatment
What to Expect
What to expect on your visits.
- Visit 1
During your comprehensive exam, a measurement of your gum tissue will be completed and the dentist will recommend the type of cleaning that is needed: either a full mouth debridement treatment to determine if you have gum disease, or a deep cleaning also called scaling and root planing.
- Visit 2
We use local anesthetic to numb your gum tissue to make your cleaning as pain free as possible. Your hygienists will clean all the bacteria under and around your gums during your cleaning. The deep cleaning appointment may have to be completed in 2 visits depending on severity of disease and number of teeth involved. Afterwards the dentist may recommend a prescription mouthwash and a prescription antibiotic to speed up your gums healing process
- Visit 3
After 4-6 weeks we repeat the gum exam from your first visit to determine how your gums have responded to the deep cleaning. Based on the outcome, your dentist will either recommend additional treatment – which could include placement of special medication between your gums and teeth to further kill bacteria, referral to a gum disease specialist, or ongoing care visits
- Visit 4
We will recommend that you see a hygienist every 3-4 months for periodontal maintenance procedures to ensure that we stabilize your periodontal disease and keep your gums healthy
